The trip at a glance

Six nights on the Big Island's Kona coast, then four on Kaua‘i's lush north shore. Everything below is editable and saves automatically — tap any itinerary stop to jump to its full details.

🏝️ Big Island · Kona

Volcanoes, coffee farms, black-sand beaches, and the famous manta ray night snorkel.

  • Resort is in Keauhou, ~10 min south of Kailua-Kona town
  • Rent a car — sights are spread out, some 1.5–2.5 hr drives
  • Book the manta snorkel + a Volcanoes day early

🌊 Kaua‘i · North Shore

Hanalei Bay, Nā Pali cliffs, Waimea Canyon, and waterfalls everywhere.

  • Resort is in Princeville — walkable to Hanalei Bay area by car (~5 min)
  • Hā‘ena State Park / Kē‘e Beach needs a reservation (see note)
  • December = humpback whale season 🐋

📅 Pace

Mix of one big adventure per day with relaxed beach + town time built in.

  • Big Island: 1 volcano day, 1 manta night, 2 beach/town days
  • Kaua‘i: 1 north-shore day, 1 canyon day, 1 boat/whale day
  • Dec 8: O‘ahu day (Pearl Harbor) between the KOA and LIH flights
Three things to book ahead (December specifics):
  1. Hā‘ena State Park / Kē‘e Beach — advance reservation required at gohaena.com, released exactly 30 days out at midnight Hawai‘i time. Non-residents pay $5 entry + $10 parking, or take the North Shore shuttle (~$40 adult / $25 child) from Princeville/Waipā. No same-day tickets, no cell service at the park.
  2. Nā Pali Coast boat tour — in winter the north-shore (Hanalei) departures usually don't run due to swell, so tours leave from the west side (Port Allen / Kekaha). Budget ~$140–300/person. It's prime whale-watching season.
  3. Manta ray night snorkel (Kona) — ~$100–150/person, peaks Dec–April, small boats sell out. Book a sunset slot a few weeks ahead.

Safety heads-up: Queen's Bath in Princeville is beautiful but genuinely dangerous in winter high surf — people have died there. It's listed below, but in December treat it as look-don't-enter unless the ocean is flat and locals confirm it's safe.
